Galaxy S III got last-minute RAM boost for Android 4.1

Samsung added RAM to

Samsung's Galaxy S III smartphone debuted before Google had officially revealed Android 4.1, but the Korean manufacturer was apparently planning ahead when it designed the device. A source familiar with the Galaxy S III design process tells The Verge that Samsung put extra memory into the device specifically to make sure that it would be able to handle the newest version of Google's mobile operating system. By doing so, Samsung hoped to "future-proof" the handset, ensuring that it would remain comparably fast and powerful no matter what shifts occurred in the OS landscape.

Samsung packed an array of features into its new handset, but the final specifications for Android 4.1 were unclear ahead of the device's launch. To be "100 percent sure" that the Galaxy S III would be more than capable of handling Google's new OS, Samsung's engineers pushed the device's internal RAM to 2GB.

Even without the newest version of Android, the device has proved quite popular in its launch, with Samsung predicting sales in excess of 10 million units. The RAM boost may help the S III keep pace with Google's operating system updates, but it's unclear how necessary it was: in announcing Android 4.1, Google pointed out that the S III's predecessor, the Galaxy S II, would also be eligible for an upgrade.
