Leaked images show off BlackBerry Messenger redesign

updated 04:10 pm EDT, Tue June 26, 2012

New BBM user interface, color scheme

Following on the heels of an image leak that was claimed to show off the first two BlackBerry 10 devices, additional images of a revamped interface for BlackBerry Messenger on BlackBerry 10 have surfaced. N4BB.com has acquired two images that appear to reveal the reworked messaging service. The UI is believed to have been redesigned to take advantage of the OLED screens said to be featured on RIM's forthcoming phones.

The screens pictured in the latest leak portray BBM with a much darker interface. The new theme, heavy on blacks and darker tones, may be aimed at reducing power consumption. Unlike LCDs, which require backlights, each pixel of an OLED panel can be completely turned off when presented with pure black elements. Interfaces dominated by white color schemes consequently draw more power than darker layouts when viewed on OLED displays.

On the touchscreen-only BlackBerry L-Series, the darker theme is said to reduce battery consumption by 25 percent. The N-Series, sporting a hardware keyboard below the display, is claimed to see a 75 percent reduction in power consumption. While the screens shown off in the leak mainly feature darker greens, blues, and grays, it is expected that users will have the option to modify to their liking in the new version of BBM.

The L-Series is expected to launch later this year when RIM rolls out BlackBerry 10, and the N-Series is expected to follow sometime in the first quarter of 2013.
