Leak: Nokia Air video suggests unlikely cloud service

updated 04:01 pm EDT, Mon June 25, 2012

Marketing firm mistakenly makes public concept video

A leaked video suggests Nokia may have been mulling the idea of developing cloud-based services for its phones. The video allegedly found by Symbian Tweet, marked "Company Confidential" for a service called Nokia Air, was accidentally made public on Finnish marketing firm Luxus' Vimeo page, leading to online speculation of a service that may not have existed in the first place.

The Nokia Air service in the video sees a cloud-based syncing product providing cross-platform updates and concurrency on MeeGo. Cloud storage would hold app data, contacts, and files, and notifications would appear on all linked devices. Depictions of a Nokia-branded tablet and assorted handsets show how the service would run.

Although the original video has been taken down by Luxus, copies have appeared on YouTube. News stories in the video can be dated to around May 2011, giving a potential of approximately one year. The semi-generic visuals of the phones and tablet suggest the devices and services likely represent concepts, rather than actual products under development. Nokia also transitioned away from Symbian and MeeGo when it established a partnership with Microsoft over Windows Phone, making the Nokia Air service even more unlikely to actually exist.

Nokia has been asked for comment, but has yet to respond.
