Swype beta update improves next-word prediction, input modes

updated 04:41 pm EDT, Wed June 20, 2012

Can crawl existing email archive for accuracy improvements

Nuance has released an update to the Swype beta. The new version of the Android virtual keyboard adds more capabilities, including a new voice-text dictionary sync feature, next-word prediction, support for over 55 languages, and now four different input methods. Also introduced is crawling existing emails and texts on a device to improve word prediction.

Next-word prediction relies on Nuance's XT9 technology. The more Swype is used, the more accuracy it gets in guessing the next word, which can be expanded further by allowing it to look over anything else typed on the handset, such as texts and emails, effectively giving it an instant history to work with. A personal dictionary has also been introduced, incorpoating new words entered by the user and through history analysis.

The Four-in-One Keyboard allows for four different control options. Swyping from letter to letter is accompanied by predictive text input powered by XT9, writing characters onscreen, and Dragon-powered dictation.

The new beta now available for download, and can be run beside an existing installation.
