Nook Simple Touch hacked to run classic Macintosh OS

updated 11:14 am EDT, Mon June 18, 2012

Nook e-reader hack follows MacOS classic on iOS and Android

A hack has allowed Macintosh OS to be installed on the Nook Simple Touch. Blogger Mike Cane last year wrote about an "impossible dream" to make a Nook Touch run an early Mac OS build. The vision eventually became a reality, following a report in February that someone had successfully installed Macintosh emulator Mini vMac on the device.

The initial "dream" was inspired by demonstrations of the classic Mac OS running on iOS, and another implementation on an Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S. Reasoning that the Nook Simple Touch runs on Android, Cane questioned if it was possible to get the Android version on the e-reader. A comment on a forum claimed to have accomplished the hack at the start of the year, however no proof was given in the form of pictures or video.

A user by the name of FlyingToaster then granted the blogger his wish, supplying an album of the hack, complete with the flying toasters screensaver. Scaling issues were mentioned, but a follow-up note advised that the paid version of Mini vMac II solved the problem and allowed for 256-color presentation, albeit in grayscale. [via The Verge]

    I wonder..

Toxic Ravine, Mouse Stampede? What about Scarab of Ra or Dungeons of Doom? Takes me back just seeing the black and white UI.

Looks a bit bogus to me

Middle screen shot looks like pre-System 6 while showing a System 7.5 install CD image, but bottom shows System 9 (aka Mac OS) splash screen. I think it is much more likely that these are screenshots being shown as pictures. The trash and boot volume should be on the right hand side of the screen, which is missing.

    Just realized

System 7.5 is almost 18 years old.

I know this is going to sound weird, but Its kind of like the first time I noticed that the Playmate of the Month was younger than I was...
