Nokia promises cheaper Windows Phones to battle Android

updated 10:39 am EDT, Thu June 14, 2012

CEO admits troubles competing with Android, iOS

On the heels of layoff announcements, Nokia chief executive Stephen Elop has promised that the company is focusing on developing cheaper Windows Phones in an attempt to "compete with Android aggressively." Although the Finnish handset maker already offers Lumia handsets with entry-level pricing, the executive suggests the company is working to bring costs down further.

Speaking during a conference call following the layoff announcement, Elop admitted that Android has presented "a lot of challenges." Google's mobile OS has already established itself as the most popular platform for low-end devices, lacking the hardware restrictions that Microsoft demands for Windows Phones.

The company earlier this year claimed its Lumia 900 had been met with positive reception in the US market, achieving sales numbers that are said to have exceeded expectations. Strong performance from a limited number of devices has yet to bring the company back to financial stability, however, as quarterly losses continue to drain remaining cash reserves.

Another 10,000 employees will be displaced by the latest round of layoffs, in a move that Elop claims is necessary to rekindle competitive strength and bring a "more focused effort on Lumia." The restructuring announcement also confirmed that Nokia's luxury brand, Vertu, will be sold.
