Amazon deal brings MGM content to Prime Instant Video

MGM agreement boosts Amazon catalog to 18,000

Amazon has expanded its Prime Instant Video content through a licensing agreement with MGM Studios. The deal brings hundreds of classic movies and TV shows to the 18,000-strong collection, which is available for instant streaming. Notable additions include Dances with Wolves, The Terminator, and TV series Stargate.

The Prime Instant Video service is an extension of the existing Amazon Instant Video store, available as part of the company's Prime subscription. The MGM movies and TV shows can be streamed by Prime subscribers for free, however non-subscribers to the $79-per-year program must pay to rent or purchase the same content.

Amazon-owned DVD rental and streaming service Lovefilm recently signed a multi-year agreement with NBC Universal to stream Universal Pictures films to UK-based users. The Prime Instant Video deal may allow MGM films to be shown on the UK streaming service in the future, though the company has yet to formally announce international availability.
