Apple TV set could use motion detection, touchscreen remote

updated 11:17 am EDT, Mon June 11, 2012

Remote 'looks similar to the iPad'

The dedicated TV set Apple is working on could use both motion detection and a touchscreen remote, says a new memo from Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White. The claim is based on a visit to Taiwan for the Computex trade show, and on talks with supply chain companies in the area. He suggests that the TV will support several methods of interaction, of which motion detection would be just one.

White's sources also point to "a unique remote control with a touch panel form factor." The device is said to look "similar to the iPad," and have a plastic bezel. The analyst isn't commenting on any other rumored control methods, namely Siri and FaceTime. If the TV has a FaceTime camera, however, both Siri and motion detection support would be mostly software obstacles.

    Motion Detection

The wife and I are watching Girls. I have to go take a leak. I get up and the video pauses. I return to my seat and the video resumes. Nice.

    um

That's not motion detection, that's viewer detection. What if you just stand up to adjust your shorts?

And touch-pad interface for a remote is not 'new'. Been done. And never took off because people hate looking at their remote to find a button as it is, why would they want to do it all the time?
