Apple to introduce apps SDK for Apple TV, report says

updated 01:22 pm EDT, Fri June 8, 2012

Third-party app plans expected to debut at WWDC

Apple is planning to announce an SDK for the Apple TV at next week's WWDC in San Francisco, a Boy Genius Report source claims. No other details have been shared, but the change would allow third-party developers to create apps for the Apple TV. While third parties do have a currently presence on the Apple TV, these are a result of negotiated deals.

The claim may tie into another one from BGR suggesting that Apple will reveal new Apple TV firmware at WWDC, which might even be the software that will underpin the company's dedicated TV set. If confirmed, opening development of third-party apps could signal what strategy Apple intends to take with content on the stand-alone TV.

Apple is also rumored to be working on a "control out" API. This would let third parties build accessories that could be controlled through an Apple TV, instead of requiring special remotes or configuration.

If this is really true then the AppleTV is starting to get more attention. TV channels with extended and interactive content as apps in the iTunes store?

Maybe someday the big players change their minds and get on board. I think it's a big chance for small and independent content providers.
