Samsung Galaxy S III requires unique MHL/HDMI cable

Samsung changes up the MHL/HDMI interface on Galaxy S III, requires unique cable

Samsung has made the microUSB port on its Galaxy S III flagship incompatible with current MHL/video adapters, Clove found. The pin connection has been changed from the older Galaxy S II or Nexus phones, so those upgrading to the latest handset will need to buy the new accessory. Being a retailer, Clove is offering the accessory for sale on its site, priced at the equivalent of about $39, taxes inclusive.

The MHL/HDMI adapter allows users to mirror the content of their phone screens on HDTVs or other HDMI-equipped displays. It includes a microUSB plug to hook up to the phone, an HDMI output for the TV, and another microUSB input for powering both the phone and adapter. The move is likely to frustrate owners of current Samsung smartphones with the cable, as the MHL/HDMI interface was always meant to be a cross-device standard.

Whether the new accessory will work with other Samsung handsets isn't known, but unlikely. [via SlashGear]
