Sierra Wireless outs thinnest embedded 4G modem

Sierra Wireless EM7700 is thinnest 4G LTE card, at 2.5mm, supports Win 8 devices

Networking gear maker Sierra Wireless has just lifted the curtain of a new product, the AirPrime EM7700 embedded 4G modem. It has the distinction of being the first thin form factor 4G LTE network module, and is just 2.5mm thick. It is meant for use with tablets and ultra-portable notebooks.

It otherwise uses the same Qualcomm MDM9200 Gobi chipset as in the older MC7700 embedded card and in Nokia's Lumia 900 smartphone. It doesn't get global 4G roaming capabilities, however, being supportive only of AT&T's LTE frequencies. When LTE isn't available, the module will go back to AT&T's HSPA+ network.

The module is due to begin shipping before the end of June to OEMs, and was made with Windows 8 support in mind. The connectorized interface will let hardware makers offer the card as an option in their products.
