Next iPhone rumored to have thinner, better cameras

updated 01:59 am EDT, Thu June 7, 2012

Front camera may be upgraded to HD-quality

KGI securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that Apple will make significant improvements to both the front and rear cameras on the next iPhone release. These advances are forced by the rumored decreased thickness of the device, and the desire to take full advantage of the alleged new 16:9 Retina Display the next iPhone may sport.

According to MacRumors, Kuo states that the rear camera will remain at 8MP, but the aperture will increase from f/2.4 to f/2.2. The increase in aperture will also serve to reduce the camera's height by 0.5mm (0.02 inches). Kuo said "[A] number of components have required a slim-down. The component that will undergo the most dramatic make-over is the rear camera. Our research shows that iPhone 5 will feature the first-ever slimmed rear camera of all iPhones, in an effort to deliver an ultra-slim iPhone 5. "

The front-facing camera is expected to have a higher resolution the the current 4:3 ratio VGA quality camera. The suspected case front has the camera moved to above the earpiece rather than it's current offset location, which should improve the user experience, according to Macrumors.

Kuo has provided supposition on unreleased Apple products in the past. The analyst relies on sources within Apple's China supply chain to postulate a coherent whole from details of component parts. [via MacRumors]
