Fifth-generation Wi-Fi standard finally reaching consumers

Asus has unveiled its ROG G74VW gaming notebook, which will be the first consumer-oriented notebook to be fully compliant with 802.11ac, the fifth-generation Wi-Fi standard. The notebook is the result of a collaborative effort between Asus and Broadcom. The announcement of the new Asus notebook was followed by the debut of a new Asus dual-band router that also supports the Wi-Fi standard.

The ROG G75VW sports an Ivy Bridge Intel Core i7 processor, Nvidia GeForce graphics cards, and up to 16GB RAM. It supports dual RAID 0/1 hard drives, and has a built-in dual-fan cooling system.

The RT-AC66U router supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, with data transmission rates up to 1.75 Gbps. It features the ASUSWRT three-step setup and has twin USB ports for file servers, print servers, and DLNA servers.

The 802.11ac standard quadruples the amount of data that will fit on an encoded carrier signal. The standard operates solely in on the 5GHz band, which has a shorter range than the 2.4GHz band. The 5GHz band has more available channels than the 2.4GHz band, though, which means it will compete with fewer devices, yielding better reception.
