Expansion adds Thunderbolt to Asus 7-series motherboards

ASUS has demonstrated its first Thunderbolt-based monitor at Computex. It is the first PC display to use the technology outside of Apple's display range suggesting that the new high-speed I/O standard is starting to gain momentum. The 27-inch screen using the connection was shown at the same time it revealed an adapter for ASUS 7-series motherboards that added the port as an extra connectivity option.

The Acer Thunderbolt monitor has 1920x1080 resolution and includes DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI connections. These are supplemented by a standard headphone jack, but no speakers. Other specifications were unavailable, while pricing and availability also remain unknown at this time. However, ASUS did confirm to Engadget that the display will be headed to North America without pinning down a timeframe.

Users of some ASUS 7-series motherboards will have the option to use a "unique system link connector" to enable a Thunderbolt EX expansion card. Taking up a PCIex4 slot and a DisplayPort connection, it acts as a pass-through via a Thunderbolt port. Again, ASUS has declined to say when it will be on sale nor how much it would cost. 27" as 1920x1080?

Please tell me one of those specs are wrong? That's a TV, not a computer display. I have a 23" 1920x1080 display, and that's bad enough.

    The specs must be wrong

At only 1920x1080, a 27 inch Thunderbolt monitor cannot compete. Although I do have to admit the idea of a headphone jack in the monitor -- that could turn out to be a game changer.
