Sprint 'unlimited' for mobile hotspots capped at 5GB

Overages for mobile hotspots will incur hefty fees

Sprint has had no qualms about reminding consumers of its status as the only wireless provider offering truly unlimited broadband, but now the wireless company appears to be modifying that stance. A writer at techdirt has revealed an email received from Sprint that contains information on data caps for Sprint mobile hotspots. According to the email, the mobile hotspot data caps go into effect this month, and users exceeding the caps will incur a per-megabyte fee.

According to the email, Sprint customers should have received notification of the new data caps in their May or June invoices. On-network data usage for mobile hotspot add-ons for phones and tablets is now capped at 5GB, as is usage for customers using their phones as modems. Any data usage over the cap will cost five cents per megabyte. According to the email, the change does not affect pricing for customers' current plans.

Unlimited plans for phones and other devices are apparently unaffected by the change. Sprint has been modifying and considering modifying its "unlimited" plans for some time, as an internal document revealed last year showed plans to cap phone hotspot data at 5GB. The carrier has implemented a feature notifying customers when they reach 75, 90, and 100 percent of their on-network monthly data limit.
