Source backs Boost Mobile getting iPhone in early September

updated 10:09 am EDT, Fri June 1, 2012

$50 unlimited plan may or may not carry over

Boost Mobile will start carrying prepaid iPhones in early September, a TechnoBuffalo source claims. Both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S are expected to be available, but it's unknown if the carrier will apply its $50 unlimited plan to the devices. This not only offers unlimited voice, texting, and data, but also the possibility of a reduction in the monthly bill in $5 increments, down to $35.

The rumor follows on the heels of a Cricket Wireless announcement making it the first carrier in the US to sell prepaid iPhones. With that essential hurdle cleared, there should be relatively little stopping the iPhone from appearing at other prepaid vendors. Boost is owned by Sprint, which already carries post-paid iPhones. The latter also controls the US branch of Virgin Mobile, which could follow Boost and Cricket in selling prepaid options.

The timing of the supposed Boost launch may be questionable. Apple is generally expected to introduce a sixth-generation iPhone in October, and it may not make sense for Boost to start carrying iPhones just a month earlier. It could be that Boost will arrive in October, that the new iPhone might ship in September, or simply that Boost will start by selling older iPhones and discount them when it has the new one in stock.
