Kabel Deutschland attains 4.7Gbps download speed in tests

updated 02:27 pm EDT, Fri June 1, 2012

12 cable modems and modern cable connection used to reach speed

A German Internet service provider claims to be the first cable provider in the world to achieve a 4,700 Mbps (4.7 Gbps) download speed. Kabel Deutschland attained the speed in a field test of their cable network in the City of Schwerin.. Theoretically, the equivalent data of a DVD can be downloaded within eight seconds and one terabyte could be transferred within half an hour.

The test by the cable company took place on a modernized section of their network, with a school being used as the destination for the data. According to Kabel Deutschland, no temporary acts of civil engineering took place to attain the speed, with the equipment used being what would be used by customers. Twelve ARRIS Touchstone cable modems were used in parallel to maximize the connection throughput, with standard Cable Modem Termination Systems being used on the Kabel Deutschland side. If there was no other traffic on the connection during the tests, the twelve modems on the school side would have averaged about 400Mbps individually.

Other download speed records typically do not use the standard cable connections and publicly available equipment used in the Kabel Deutschland tests. Cisco and Swedish ISP Telia used high-end equipment and a fiber-based network to allow the 20,000 attendees of Dreamhack to go online in November, managing a 120Gbps connection. Caltech and the University of Victoria managed a connection of 186Gbps over a 100Gbps bidirectional fiber optic link.
