Verizon doubles FiOS Internet speeds on most plans

updated 12:12 pm EDT, Wed May 30, 2012

FiOS home Internet download speeds to be doubled starting in June

Verizon has revealed it will double all but its lowest-tier FiOS fiber-optic home Internet speeds starting in June. The plans and new speeds are outlined online (pdf). It should be noted, however, that upload speeds weren't quite doubled in most cases, with only the highest and second-highest tier getting bumps in these categories.

The second-highest tier saw the biggest improvement, going from 50Mbps download speeds to 150Mbps, while uploads more than tripled, from 20Mbps to 65Mbps. The top-tier plan grows from 150Mbps download and 35Mbps upload to 300Mbps and 65Mbsp, respectively. That top tier currently costs a heady $200 per month, however, and it's not likely that these prices will be lowered in June.

Early adopters of the Fiberoptic internet service may have to have some equipment replaced. Early Verizon-provided routers aren't capable of delivering more than 100Mbps even with a firmware update. The Optical Network Terminal, or ONT, may need to be replaced in some instances as well, also most likely with initial adopter's installations.
