Startup uses Kinect to make existing displays into 3D touchscreens

Startup company Übi has been showing off a tech demo utilizing Microsoft's Kinect camera to turn walls into interactive touchscreens. The Munich-based startup says that the technology can be applied to virtually any surface, allowing users to interact with presentations without the need for pointers, clickers, or mice of any kind.

Übi's tech demo was developed using Microsoft's Kinect for Windows software development kit, WiredUK reports. The project was partially funded by Microsoft as part of its Kinect Accelerator program.

Übi's setup pairs the Kinect with internally-developed software that analyzes and processes images captured by the Kinect's sensors. The software interprets gestures as command inputs, allowing users to click, drag, and edit screen elements as though they were doing so with a traditional input device.

The technology is low-cost, and Übi says it can be retrofitted into existing projection systems without too much effort. As the project is still in development, the company have not released any information yet on possible availability or cost, but the team is looking to turn the technology into a commercial product in the future.
