Panasonic debuts Lumix Remote app for DMC-FX90 camera

updated 09:41 am EDT, Mon May 28, 2012

Android, iOS users can use zoom, shutter functions

Owners of Panasonic's Lumix DMC-FX90 point and shoot camera can now use their smartphones as a wireless remote for the unit, using it to check the image preview, set zoom level and shoot, including a special "self portrait" mode. The free Lumix Remote app, which will be expanded to cover additional Lumix cameras with built-in Wi-Fi, is available for both iOS (4.3 and higher) and Android (v2.2 and higher). A firmware upgrade is required as well.

Once users upgrade the camera's firmware, the FX90 will offer a "remote view" on the app that mirrors the live view, a remote shutter control and more. A separate app, Lumix Link, is used to transfer photos from the camera to the iOS or Android device.

The Lumix DMC-FX90 was released about nine months ago, and apart from the built-in Wi-Fi capability and three-inch touchscreen, would be considered a standard 2011 consumer pocket camera. It comes with a 5x optical zoom, 12MP sensor, f2.5 maximum aperture lens and can shoot 1080i video at 60 frames per second or 1080p at 30FPS. It can generally be found at under $300.
