Rumor: Microsoft prepping Office for iOS and Android tablets

updated 04:22 pm EDT, Wed May 23, 2012

Office for tablets set to arrive in November

Microsoft is preparing to release tablet versions of its Office suite for both Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms, a source familiar with the software has told BGR. The company had been previously rumored to be bringing its Office suite to the iPad, and the new details, if true, will see the productivity suite arriving on tablets in November.

The Office app reportedly seen running on an iPad is said to be nearly identical to the version leaked in February of this year by The Daily. Microsoft disavowed that version, claiming that The Daily had been given "bad info," but hinted that the company would be clarifying the future of Office on tablets "in the coming weeks."

The version reportedly seen could make an appearance on the iPhone and iPod touch, as the loading screen for the app is said to read "Office for iOS."

If true, the news could represent an admission by Microsoft that it cannot rely solely on its forthcoming Windows 8 tablet lineup to ensure the relevance of its mainstay Office line in the touchscreen era. Microsoft is believed to have been working on a tablet-native version of Office for some time now; but, with the market dominated by Apple and Google-powered tablets and the first Windows 8 tablets not arriving until later this year, Office may need to appear on competing operating systems if only to ensure that it isn't supplanted by any number of competitor productivity suites.
