Samsung Chromebox leaked on TigerDirect web store

updated 09:19 pm EDT, Tue May 22, 2012

Small form factor computer runs Google's Chrome OS

Images of Samsung's forthcoming Chromebox desktop appeared briefly on the Internet today, as retailer TigerDirect posted a video featuring the device. The video has since been taken down, but it confirmed details Samsung had previously released when it revealed the device in January. The desktop computer, similar in its form factor to Apple's Mac mini, will be one of the first desktop PCs to run Google's Chrome operating system.

Chrome OS is an internet-centric operating system Google has been pushing in parallel to its Android mobile operating system. Samsung's Chromebox will come with a 1.9GHz, dual-core Celeron B840 processor, 4GB of memory, and a 16GB solid-state drive. The Chromebox will feature six USB ports, and is expected to retail for $330.

Further details on the device's availability are unavailable, as TigerDirect has taken down the Chromebox's product listing. In contrast to the successes of the Android platform, Google's Chrome OS has struggled to gain a foothold in the notebook and desktop sectors. Google has attempted to spur adoption of the new OS, slashing prices, tweaking Chrome OS' functionalities, and integrating the system with Google Drive.
