Verizon: four phones to get global GSM patch

updated 10:55 pm EDT, Mon May 21, 2012

Droid 4, RAZR, RAZR Maxx, HTC Rezound

Verizon has announced that four of their phones will receive a patch to enable global roaming on the GSM network. The Droid 4 upgrade was previously announced, and today's announcement adds the Droid RAZR, Droid RAZR Maxx, and HTC Rezound. No specific patch release date has been made public. Following the patch, owners of the four phones will be able to take their smartphones overseas and (for a fee) use voice service in more than 220 countries and receive data in more than 205 countries.

Electronista had a hands-on with the Droid 4 and the RAZR Maxx in January. Previous rumors hinted at the HTC Rezound having partial global GSM capability. The LG Spectrum was also promised a firmware update for global GSM, but to date, none has arrived.

The Droid 4, RAZR, and RAZR Maxx are all scheduled to receive Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) in the third quarter of this year. HTC Rezound users are able to upgrade to Android 4 through unofficial means, but an official patch is expected.
