Rumor: HTC, Acer, Asus to bring Tizen devices in second half

Device makers to roll out handsets on fledgling OS

Tizen, the operating system developed as a partnership between Intel and Samsung, may finally debut on smartphones in the second half of this year. The scalable OS, sources tell Digitimes, will be appearing on smartphones, tablets, and notebooks from a number of different manufacturers.

The second half of 2012 may see new Tizen-based products from Acer, Asus, and HTC. Asus and Acer are said to be readying Tizen-based netbooks, with a primary focus on emerging markets. Other manufacturers are reportedly targeting in-vehicle infotainment as an application of the scalable OS.

Tizen is said to be scalable from smartphones up through Internet-aware televisions. Initially based upon Intel's MeeGo and Samsung's LiMo operating systems, Tizen relies heavily on HTML5, and implements a number of features found in other popular mobile operating systems.

The last few weeks have seen a number of reports emerging on Tizen's capabilities and future applications. A video shot earlier this month showed the OS running on a Samsung prototype phone, and a presentation from Open Mobile demonstrated that their Application Compatibility Layer can make the fledgling OS capable of running apps built for Android.
