Samsung said to have 9 million Galaxy S III pre-orders

Samsung Galaxy S III pre-orders in the millions

Samsung is reported to have notched up 9 million pre-orders for its Galaxy S III smartphone ahead of its launch. According to Reuters, the pre-orders have been made from over 100 global carriers, not customers, ahead of its release. Customers will be able to get their hands on the device starting May 29 in Germany, before it begins rolling out across other countries.

Samsung is currently performing extremely well in the smartphone space. It retook the unofficial number one smartphone vendor title from Apple in Q1 this, and in February it revealed that it had sold over 20 million Galaxy S II handsets. However, while carrier interest is high for the Galaxy S III, it will remain to be seen whether Samsung will score a hat trick of sales hits with its flagship smartphones.

The Galaxy S III has leading-edge technical specifications, and easily outmuscles its predecessor with its quad-core Exynos 4412 1.4GHz processor for international markets, and even in its dual-core Snapgdragon S4 LTE variant for the US. Software enhancements including the iPhone 4S Siri imitation S Voice and its 'Pop up play' video in web browser function are also attractive additions.

However, it has been criticized in some quarters for being over large at 4.8-inches, while its display is also a PenTile-type using shared subpixels that can create a 'fuzzy' effect on text and around icons. Its extensive use of plastic has also been noted as another concern, although its build quality is considered solid.

Samsung appears to be confident that it will sell through most of its Galaxy S III handsets to users. It is said to be churning out Galaxy S III handsets at the rate of around 5 million per month with its South Korean manufacturing facility running at full capacity. Recent history suggests that Samsung will sell millions of the Galaxy S III as it is the uncontested Android smartphone leader - but it is still too early to tell whether it will outsell its predecessor.

    Bigger screen

Samsung wants to fill the void until the new iPhone is out, after that it's game over for other big screen phones.

    Right....

because carriers are sooooo dumb they know that no one will buy the galaxy, but they're ordering them anyway. Because they just love throwing their money at stuff that won't sell.
