Samsung Galaxy S III gets 2GB of RAM for Japan

updated 08:37 am EDT, Thu May 17, 2012

Japanese Samsung Galaxy S III users get bonus RAM

The forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S III for Japan has been fitted 2GB of RAM, versus the standard 1GB of RAM for most other international markets. The Japanese variant of the GS III also runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 'Krait' dual-core SoC, which is compatible with Japan's NTT Docomo 4G LTE network. The inclusion of the additional RAM is likely to help support Japan-only features such as 1 seg TV tuner without bogging down overall system performance.

While it is unlikely that other markets will be inline for the 1GB RAM upgrade, the Galaxy S III will have more than enough power for users. Like the HTC One X, which is offered with a quad-core Tegra 3 processor on 3G networks and the same dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor for 4G LTE networks, the Galaxy S III follows suit. However, the Samsung 1.4GHz Exynos 4412 quad-core processor fitted to the Galaxy S III 3G variant has been shown to outpace the Tegra 3, giving it a performance edge.

Beyond the addition of the 2GB of RAM for the Japanese model and the likely 1 seg TV tuner, the remaining specs are the same as elsewhere. It will continue to centre on an oversize 4.8-inch 1280x720 Super AMOLED HD display. It will be offered in 16, 32 and 64GB versions with a large 2,100mAh battery to provide enough power to keep the display running for extended use. It runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with Samsung's latest TouchWiz overlay.
