Google 'Knowledge Graph' disambiguates search results

updated 05:42 pm EDT, Wed May 16, 2012

Users can quickly filter results

Google has introduced a new search feature, "Knowledge Graph," that aims to enhance search results in several ways. For search queries that may bring ambiguous results, users can now click on their intended subject and view the correct results. The company uses "Taj Mahal" as an example, as users may be searching for the musician, the mausoleum in India, or a local business using the same name.

Aside from the disambiguation tool, Knowledge Graph brings a summarization for certain queries. When searching for a famous individual, the system presents birth and death dates, children, notable accomplishments, education and other important details. Particular details are customized based on popular search terms associated with people, things or concepts.

The company promises that its results will also go "deeper and broader," including facts or connections that searchers may appreciate but would have been omitted from previous results.

"We can now sometimes help answer your next question before you've asked it, because the facts we show are informed by what other people have searched for," the company wrote in a blog post. "For example, the information we show for Tom Cruise answers 37 percent of next queries that people ask about him."

Google is already gradually rolling out the Knowledge Graph view for US English users, before it heads to tablets and smartphones.
