T-Mobile update for Sensation 4G to necessitate hotspot fee

updated 12:12 pm EDT, Tue May 15, 2012

Sensation 4G Android 4.0 update will bring with it a $15 hotspot fee

When T-Mobile releases the Android 4.0 update for the HTC Sensation 4G tomorrow, it will bring with it a mandatory $15 per month charge for the wireless hotspot feature. According to PCMag, some users have thus far got the feature for free. Some other handsets due to get the latest OS soon at the carrier do not carry such a provision, however, including the Amaze 4G.

The carrier officially requires the Wi-Fi Mobile Hotspot feature in order to let users share their handsets' data connections with other devices, though some subscribers have said in the past that they can use it for free. The fee is officially required whether users connect over Wi-Fi or tether over a USB cable.

According to a T-Mobile rep, the oversight was due to technical limitations with software on some handsets. Also, some users were given a grace period.

If Sensation 4G users don't upgrade to Android 4.0, it's likely they will continue to be able to use their phones as modems without paying the $15 monthly fee.
