KDDI Smart TV Box will run on Android 4.0, connect to cloud service

Japanese hardware maker KDDI announced this week it will begin consumer testing of a new Smart TV Box this summer. The device will run on Android 4.0 and connect to HDTVs and enable sharing of content between Android smartphones and tablets. Other details are scarce, though some form of web access is more than likely.

Access to certain apps may also be granted, but whether users will have the same unrestricted access to Google Play remains is doubtful, as most apps there require a touchscreen for interaction. A cloud-based service will launch alongside the device, with a focus on sharing TV shows and other multimedia files between the TV and mobile platforms.

What unique features the Smart TV Box will offer compared to the likes of the Android-powered Google TV platform remains to be seen. [via NewLaunches]
