iMac said to be among upcoming Retina Mac systems

iMac's screen size may demand significant video hardware

Apple is not only working on Retina MacBook Pros, but also Retina-equipped iMacs, says ABC News. The site quotes "its own sources," which also back up the upgraded MacBook Pros, but offer no other details. It's generally believed that Apple will introduce one or more upgraded systems at this year's WWDC, which starts June 11th.

Retina iMacs could represent a major technological hurdle for Apple. While a 15-inch MacBook Pro would need to support resolutions up to 2880x1800, a 21.5-inch iMac would need to handle 3840x2160, and a 27-inch model would need to support a massive 5120x2880. Handling such resolutions may require unusually powerful video hardware, much in the same way that the third-generation iPad has quad-core graphics on top of a dual-core CPU.
