Nokia brings Lumia Reading app to six European countries

updated 02:16 pm EDT, Fri May 11, 2012

Nokia's Reading app now available for Lumia range in key European markets

First introduced at Mobile World Congress, Nokia's Reading app and related e-bookstore for the Windows Phone-powered Lumia range of smartphones will launch in Europe. The two will reach users in France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, and the UK, PaidContent reported. The idea is to bring local-language e-books to markets that haven't yet seen a widespread adoption of the medium.

The app will be available for the Lumia 900, 800, 710, and 610 and is due to arrive this week. It offers an adjustable font size along with a night mode that flips the background to black and the text to white.

Eventually, the app will be updated to support audio books and a News Stream feature that is being described as a virtual news magazine with the ability to subscribe to local and international RSS feeds.

It will compete with the likes of Amazon's Kindle hardware and the related apps for iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows that's available in France, Italy, Spain, and the UK.

Exactly how many e-books will be offered isn't yet known, as the company only said that a "wide range of local titles, as well as a large collection of English titles popular across the world" will be available.
