Rumor: Facebook to mimic Dropbox with file sharing feature

updated 08:45 pm EDT, Thu May 10, 2012

Social network to let users share multiple file types

Facebook may be moving into the file sharing sector, crowding a space already occupied by Dropbox, Box, and, newly, Google. Sources have told Mashable that the social networking giant is preparing to allow users to share a number of file types some time very soon. The feature will be integrated into Facebook's Group pages.

Facebook already features file sharing for some of its groups, having launched its Groups for Schools feature, which allows users with common .edu email addresses to exchange files and message each other through a shared page. The plan to roll out the feature to all groups, though, will allow for a 25MB file size limit. Users will be able to share many file types, with the notable exceptions of music files and executable files.

Facebook may have been working on this feature for some time. The social network acquired most of the assets and brought in the founder of drop.io, a well-known file transfer service, back in 2010. It is unknown how the added feature will affect other file sharing options for Facebook users, such as Pipe. [via Mashable]
