Samsung Galaxy Note gets ICS, Premium Suite, multi-core support

The Samsung Galaxy Note (N7000) has received its long promised update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The revised firmware (XXLPY 4.0.3, build date May 4) is rolling out to users over-the-air in Germany and the Netherlands at the time of writing. It brings with it Samsung's revamped TouchWiz UI and its new Premium Suite of S-pen based apps including S Note, Shape Match and My Story.

The 319MB update is expected to be released region by region so as not to overload Samsung's update servers and ensure that users devices aren't bricked during the update process. In addition to the improved S-pen applications, the update will bring with it a range of performance improvements including the ability to properly support the Note's 1.4GHz dual-core processor.

To original Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) installation on the Note was not designed with multi-core processors in mind, and any utilization of the device's second core came through Samsung-specific tweaks. As a result, users should be able to see big boosts in performance benchmarks with significantly reduced lag, snappier transitions and more stable multitasking operation.
