First-person shooter sequel now on iOS

Gameloft today released the third installment of the N.O.V.A. series of first-person shooters. Previous installations of the sci-fi shooter series have earned acclaim for the detailed graphics Gameloft manages to coax out of mobile hardware. N.O.V.A. 3 [$7 in the App Store] follows a band of space marines from the Near Orbital Vanguard Alliance in their quest to save their planet from aliens.

The game features a single-player campaign with 10 levels, as well as six multiplayer modes supporting up to 12 players. N.O.V.A. 3 is powered by a Gameloft-developed 3D graphics engine, but apparently is not optimized for the New iPad's Retina Display. Gameloft says a version of the game for Android devices is close to release.

N.O.V.A. 3 was previously rumored to have been developed using the Unreal Engine, as was its predecessor N.O.V.A. 2. The Unreal Engine is a much-celebrated engine in the console world, as it powers console hits such as Gears of War, as well as some of the more graphically impressive iOS titles like Infinity Blade. Gameloft has yet to reveal whether the graphics engine used in development of the game was a modified version of the Unreal Engine or an engine fully developed in-house.
