WiMAX 4G network launches at Virgin, Boost on May 31, hardware detailed

As promised late last month, Sprint's WiMAX 4G network will soon come to Virgin and Boost Mobile, with the two providers releasing more details on Tuesday. The initial 4G-capable devices were announced, with the ship dates and live date for them being May 31. Virgin will get data devices: the Broadband2Go-branded Sierra Wireless Overdrive Pro hotspot and the Franklin U600 USB modem.

An HTC Evo V 4G handset will also be available at Virgin, which is basically an Evo 3D. It gets Android 4.0 overlaid with Sense 3.6. It will cost $300 without a contract, while the Overdrive Pro will cost $150 and the U600 $100. The plans start at $35 for 200 minutes, unlimited messaging and unlimited 4G data. Enabling the five-device hotspot sharing functionality requires a Beyond Talk plan that starts at $50 per month. In the case of the data-only devices, users get unlimited 4G data for $35 per month, and 2GB of 3G data in areas without access to 4G.

Over at Boost Mobile, the carrier borrows Sprint's HTC Evo Design 4G but adds Android 4.0 and Sense 3.6. It is the first Boost device to get Visual Voicemail and will also cost $300 contract-free. It includes a 2GB microSD memory card, however. Unlimited plans start at $55 per month, but can shrink by $5 per month for every six months of on-time payments, but only to $40 per month. Enabling the hotspot feature on the phone costs an additional $10 per month.
