Hands on: HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE for Verizon

updated 06:32 pm EDT, Tue May 8, 2012

Handset bucks the size trend

HTC has brought its latest handsets to CTIA's New Orleans expo, where Electronista had a chance to try out the new Droid Incredible 4G LTE phone that will be headed to Verizon. The handset pairs Android 4.0 with HTC's Sense 4.0 interface overlay, while retaining the classic form of the original Droid Incredible that has been discontinued for some time.

The Droid Incredible 4G offers a slightly larger display than its predecessor, spreading from 3.7- to four-inches from corner to corner, however the panel is tiny in comparison to many high-end Android devices, such as the Galaxy Nexus that sports a 4.65-inch display. The company chose to stick with a Super LCD, eliminating the fuzzy pixel appearance of AMOLED PenTile technology but lacking extreme color vibrance.

A Snapdragon S4 processor provides the power, though the new Incredible throttles the chip speed down to 1.2GHz rather than running it at 1.5GHz. Despite this limitation, we encountered difficulty attempting to find any perceivable performance detriment in real-world tests.

For users who find the gigantic Android phones to be unwieldy, the Droid Incredible 4G LTE may be the perfect choice, however for the most vibrant displays with 1280x720 HD presentation, one of the larger competitors may prove the better choice.

Verizon has yet to announce a launch date or pricing, though we expect the device to be paired with a modest price-tag aimed at the midrange Android market.
