LG confirms plans to ship TVs with Google TV

updated 05:56 am EDT, Mon May 7, 2012

LG Internet-enabled TVs with Google TV inbound

In line with an earlier rumor, LG has announced its plan to start shipping TVs to the US pre-installed with the latest iteration of Google TV running on its in-house L9 ARM-based processors. It's next-generation of smart TVs are expected to arrive the week beginning May 21 and carry with them the South Korean company's hopes of grabbing increased market share from Samsung, Sony and Vizio. First previewed at CES 2012, the company has not yet specified details about which models it will ship or pricing details at this juncture.

'Production of Google TVs will start from May 17 from our factory in Mexico and U.S. consumers will be able to buy the product from the week of May 21, Ro Seogho, executive vice president of LG's TV business unit, announced.

LGs new range of Google TVs are also among the first to feature 3D and use passive 3D glasses that are cheaper, lighter and cause less eye-strain for most users. They are expected to be available in 47- and 55-inch sizes priced at around $1600 and $2,100 respectively. While its Japanese competitors have been struggling to turn a profit on their sets, LG has experienced relatively strong sales of its high-end Internet-enabled TV's.

Although Google chairman Eric Schmidt has predicted Google TV will make a splash this summer, there are only a handful of manufacturers backing its TV-based OS. After a very shaky start in 2011, which included Logitech's chief famously decrying its investment in Google TV products a mistake, Google has yet to make the same impact in living rooms that Apple has with its relatively simple Apple TV STB. No one knows what Apple will do next and so everyone is just shooting in the dark, hoping to hit something. AppleTV is a great idea and with a few small changes could become the next great thing.

    Loser company

Before they changed their name to Lucky-Goldstar, Goldstar made the crappiest products in every category. I wouldn't buy anything branded LG.

    Desperate Times

LG is having a major financial and innovation crisis so it jumps on board Google TV, sort of like Nokia with Microsoft, hhmm. At the end of the day LG, SAMSUNG, Sony et al, are throwing everything and anything up to get ahead of Apple, who may never do anything in this space given the weird market construction with content owners and distributors. My guess is that a much larger crisis in the TV market will need to emerge before Apple can disrupt it.
