Mozilla to unify Firefox UI across desktops, mobiles

updated 12:24 pm EDT, Wed May 2, 2012

New design aims for consistent experience

Mozilla is working to introduce a standard Firefox user experience that will carry across desktop, smartphone, and tablet form factors. A slideshow from Mozilla's recently-combined desktop and mobile design teams shows how the teams plan to carry a "soft, friendly, and human" design approach across a number of platforms.

The main design element of the new Firefox will be curvature. The new design, dubbed Australis, will rely on curved tabs and cleaned-up interfaces. Versions of the browser will implement interface and design features to take advantage of specific platforms' capabilities; for instance, swiping up on a smartphone or tablet to bring up a sharing menu. The design team will also tailor each version of the browser to incorporate the dominant style aspect of its platform, such as the tiled Metro UI found in Windows 8.

Mozilla has been rolling out frequent updates to its Firefox browser for some time now, each aimed at improving browser performance across a variety of platforms. The newest version, Firefox 13, is expected to arrive in a bit over a month, and is available for download from the company's beta release channel and will begin implementing some of the design changes that will be finalized in Australis.
