Pinterest adds automatic creator attribution to photos

updated 01:10 am EDT, Wed May 2, 2012

Flickr, Behance, Vimeo, YouTube today, more coming

Pinterest continues to add features to its service. Earlier today, the official Pinterest blog detailed the newest addition -- automatic creator attribution from original content sources Flickr, Behance, Vimeo, and YouTube. Other content providers are expected to be added later in the year.

Everything pinnable is editable to some extent, but in a change to the normal Pinterest process, attribution is uneditable by users. Pinterest has taken an extra step to retroactively apply attribution to many items already pinned on the service.

While Pinterest believes that it is protected from copyright infringement claims under Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) safe harbor provisions regarding use of copyrighted images and content, it has come under some fire from rights holders about misuse of material. Pinterest claims no ownership of user posted content. However, according to the terms of the user agreement, when a user posts something on the service, the user "grant[s] us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, sublicensable, worldwide license to use, display, reproduce, re-pin, modify (e.g., re-format), re-arrange, and distribute your User Content on Pinterest for the purposes of operating and providing the Service(s) to you and to our other Users." Most social media sites, such as Facebook, have similar terms. Pinterest does have a rights owner takedown process if something is posted without the creator's permission.

The rights attribution enacted today doesn't address compensation for commercial content.
