Nokia's 41MP PureView 808 set to arrive in India, Russia

updated 09:05 am EDT, Wed May 2, 2012

First run expected to ship this month

Nokia has announced that its PureView 808 phone, which we tried out earlier this year at Mobile World Congress, is set to arrive in select markets sometime this month. The first countries to receive the camera-centric handset include India and Russia, ahead of a wider international rollout.

The device features a 42-megapixel camera sensor, bringing the pixel count well beyond any other smartphone currently on the market. Taking inspiration from satellites, the company decided to embrace high resolution as an alternative to optical zoom for faster, quieter operation and improved low-light performance.

Aside from the camera, the phone also integrates a four-inch AMOLED display with 360x640 resolution, a single-core 1.1GHz processor, and automatic gain adjustment when recording videos in loud environments. Symbian powers the phone, however Nokia's job postings suggest a Windows Phone variant may be under development.

The company has also announced that it plans to extend its partnership with Carl Zeiss, following seven years of collaboration. The German optics manufacturer has been credited with helping design the smartphone cameras on the PureView and N8, which integrate Carl Zeiss lenses.

The PureView is expected to carry a 599 (~$785 USD) price tag when it arrives, though the pricing may vary by country.
