Foursquare for BlackBerry gets NFC check-ins

updated 07:25 pm EDT, Fri April 27, 2012

Tap-based location sharing comes to Foursquare

BlackBerry users will now be able to quickly share their locations, thanks to today's update to the Foursuare app. The update (BlackBerry App World) implements NFC (near field communications) on certain BlackBerry models, such as the Bold 9900, to let users simply tap their handsets on NFC stickers to share their locations.

The update also includes improvements for overall app speed and GPS performance, as well as the option to have Foursquare updates sent directly to a user's main BlackBerry inbox.

The update brings the BlackBerry version of the app in line with the capabilities of the Android version. RIM has been adding NFC capabilities to its handsets since 2011, and scored the first commercial application of NFC on its phones in a partnership with Spanish provider Telefonica.
