updated 11:10 am EDT, Thu April 26, 2012

iPad almost totally dominates

The iPhone 4S was far and away the most-activated device during the March quarter by Good Technology enterprise customers, a new study by the firm says. The phone represented 37 percent of activations, roughly four times the amount of any other device. The iPad 2 took home second place at 17.7 percent; the third-gen iPad came in fourth at 4.3 percent, but was only available for less than one month in the quarter, and nevertheless accounted for 12.1 percent of all of the March activations Good tracked.

Although Android devices accounted for 26.1 percent of the quarter's activations, no one device from the category took a sizable amount. The Motorola Droid was in fact tops at 1.6 percent, and even all Android tablets combined were just 2.7 percent. Good notes that by extension, the iPad controlled 97.3 percent of all tablet activations in the March quarter.

"Apple's continued growth is not only being driven by consumers and the overall BYOD [Bring Your Own Device] trend, but also by proactive enterprise deployment of iPads," the firm comments. The life sciences sector is said to have seen the highest growth rate in net activations of iPads, increasing from under 3 percent in October 2011 to almost 14 percent by January. Good's senior VP for corporate strategy, John Herrema, suggests that upcoming Windows 8 tablets should create more competition for the iPad in the enterprise realm.
