Chinese manufacturer teases 6.65mm-thick phone

Chinese handset maker OPPO is holding a contest for the public to name a forthcoming, as-yet-unannounced phone. At the same time, Engadget China has leaked an image of an OPPO handset that could snag the title of World's Thinnest Smartphone. The ultra-slim handset is rumored to measure just .26-inch thick.

A picture emerged today from an unnamed source revealing a thin device with a metallic bezel, three capacitive buttons in the Android style, and a three-pin contact for dock connection. The bezel also appears to have a dust cover built in, possibly for a memory expansion or SIM card slot.

Though as yet unannounced, if the phone's purported dimensions prove accurate, that would make it the slimmest handset on the market, just edging out Huawei's Ascend P1 by .001 inch. OPPO has yet to confirm the phone, and the image leak came with no information as to specs, carriers, or availability; though the company website features a contest to find a name for an unreleased smartphone.

The device could still be high-end, given others' achievements within similar dimensions: the Ascend P1 packs a 1.5GHZ dual-core processor into its slightly thicker frame. OPPO's previous handset offerings include the hardware keyboard-toting X903 and the Find 3, both Android-powered and exclusive to the Chinese market.
