Samsung Galaxy S III test may hint at just dual 1.4GHz chip

AnTuTu benchmark shows no quad-core

A device being billed as a Galaxy S III has shown up in AnTuTu benchmarks that could point to more modest hardware. The device spotted at Droid-Life is listed as having a 4.7-inch, 720p screen like some rumors, but it would only have a dual-core, 1.4GHz Exynos 4212 chip, not the quad-core 4412 commonly attached to the next-generation phone. It added a 12-megapixel camera to the otherwise suspected details.

It's possible that the device name was faked, although the hardware details don't line up with any existing Samsung hardware. The Galaxy Nexus has a 1.2GHz chip and lower resolution cameras. At the opposite end, the Galaxy Note has the same 1.4GHz processor, but a 5.3-inch, 1280x800 display and an eight-megapixel camera at the back.

Some mystery has persisted as to whether or not any hardware components necessarily mirror what's in the shipping product. Some of the more definitive leaks have still shown devices from as far back as December, when the 4412 might not have been ready.

A 1.4GHz Exynos 4212 would still be faster than what's in the Galaxy S II, but could spark disappointment if it defines the final hardware. Samsung has established an early pattern of leaving the Galaxy S' fundamentals untouched for a year, which could see Apple and others leapfrog the S III faster than once thought.
