Sony rumored tapping Samsung for OLED TV displays in 2013

updated 07:45 am EDT, Tue April 24, 2012

Sony may use old partner for OLED jump

Sony might jump to its one-time partner Samsung to leap into OLED TVs. Purported insiders claimed Tuesday to Digitimes that Sony, having unsuccessfully tried a partnership with AU Optronics on large-size OLEDs, was going with Samsung-made OLED panels for some Bravia TVs due in 2013. AUO wouldn't have large-enough organic displays until late 2012, or too late for Sony to use them, according to the tip.

Along with being a long-term help for LCDs, Samsung has been associated with Sony in OLEDs as well. The PlayStation Vita's five-inch OLED is believed an example of a collaboration between the two.

Neither side of the possible deal has commented on the rumor.

Sony has been shying away from producing some of its TV panels itself as the high costs have become prohibitively expensive in Japan given the current climate. Samsung would give it a ready-made, high-end roster of OLED displays to use, including its 55-inch Super OLED TV.
