Book publisher Tor to remove DRM from e-books in July

updated 07:20 pm EDT, Tue April 24, 2012

Future Tor Books to be DRM-free

Tor Books, the fantasy and sci-fi publisher, plans to remove DRM from its entire library of e-books by July. This move makes Tor one of the largest book publishers to have shied away from DRM protection.

Tor president and publisher Tom Doherty said "Our authors and readers have been asking for this for a long time. They're a technically sophisticated bunch, and DRM is a constant annoyance to them. It prevents them from using legitimately-purchased e-books in perfectly legal ways, like moving them from one kind of e-reader to another."

Future customers buying from the e-book ranges of Tor, Forge, Orb, Starscape, and Tor Teen will not see a change in the way books are bought, with no mention of measures to remove the DRM from already sold copies, however the company soon looks to sell through retailers that specialize in DRM-free titles.
