Google unleashes software development kit for Drive

updated 08:45 pm EDT, Tue April 24, 2012

Code examples, API, guidelines provided for devs

Google Drive wasn't Google's only release today. With less fanfare than the cloud storage announcement, Google also released the Google Drive Software Development Kid (SDK). The SDK allows developers to implement Google Drive integration and further allows an application to take advantage of Google's sharing, identity management, and storage.

With the SDK, Google has provided samples of how users interact with Google Drive integrated applications, specifics on how to start integrating Drive with an existing application in development, code examples in five different programming languages, and a full Application Programming Interface (API) reference manual.

At the launch of Google Drive, 18 applications were available that take advantage of the SDK. Five gigabytes are available free to users, with more storage available on a pay basis. Google drive's launch had been dogged by rumors and leaks since 2008.
