ASUS Ivy Bridge board hits 7GHz with all cores

ASUS is touting an overclocking record for its P8Z77-V Deluxe mainboard. Using a new Ivy Bridge-based 3.5GHz Core i7-3770K, the company successfully boosted the processor up to just short of 7GHz while keeping all four cores active. The feat also included 16GB of RAM running at over 3GHz with all four memory channels active, something not always possible at this level.

Among the feats accomplished were calculating 32 million digits of Pi in four minutes and 52 seconds and scoring 164,589 points in 3DMark 2001 SE, an old test but one that could show the raw performance of the processor.

The mainboard, running a new Z77 chipset tailored to Ivy Bridge, was taking advantage of its multiple digital voltage controllers to get the most efficiency out of the energy being fed to the processor and memory.

Overclocks running higher have been possible, but have usually had to shut down multiple cores to work. Any overclocking at this will normally require more than just fans to remain stable, such as liquid cooling. The test still both shows the potential headroom for extreme use as well as for casual overclockers who just want to get more than what Intel ships.
