SkyDrive desktop app said close

Microsoft's SkyDrive desktop app could imminent. A new tip from sources for The Verge had the app coming to Windows 7 users, preceding the Windows 8 version (pictured), in a matter of a few weeks. The web version would get small interface changes to adapt to the Windows 7 app, and would have an option to add a computer by using the software as a hook.

The move might see Microsoft take a step backwards and cut the free SkyDrive option from 25GB to 7GB, putting it just above Dropbox, iCloud, and Google Drive but with noticeably less flexibility. Paid options would let users add 20GB more for $10 per year, another 50GB for $25, or 100GB for $50. The storage drop for free users wasn't definite and might not be mentioned.

An introduction could come on Friday, at a presentation at The Next Web's conference. The Windows 8 edition wouldn't likely show until closer to the actual OS release, widely expected in the fall.

SkyDrive has elements of both cloud sync services like iCloud and pure storage like Dropbox. Although it can serve as general storage space, it figures heavily in Windows Phone, as photos can optionally be automatically uploaded from a Windows Phone and accessible from anywhere.
