Google Drive forces updates in Dropbox sharing

Dropbox has updated its cloud storage service, adding new ways to share files. As noted on the company blog, users can now share files and folders anywhere in their Dropbox using newly created links.

Previously, folder sharing could only be done with other Dropbox users, with individual files accessible to non-users when shared through the public folder. The changes on the recently redesigned website, mobile apps, and soon on the desktop application allow for linking folders and files to anyone from anywhere in the Dropbox. Shared files can be previewed in the browser and then saved by the recipient to their computer or own Dropbox account.

This all takes place ahead of the expected Google Drive launch rumored for later this week, possibly as soon as Tuesday.

This article is flat-out wrong. I've been sharing links to documents/folders NOT in my public folder for a long long time. I do this DAILY with a publisher and editor. You just ask Dropbox for a link, and it generates one - even a nice shortened one.

The blog post that this article references is about being able to share the files and have them VIEWED through the Dropbox website. They've added a bunch of online viewers - which is nice - but has nothing to do with the ability to generate and share public links.
